Topic Israel - Diaspora Relations: A New Agenda?
Time Slot time.gif (1268 bytes) Monday, February 22 @ 7:00 - 8:00pm
Host Beth Weiner
Affiliation link.gif (780 bytes) Melitz
E-mail info@melitz.org.il
Description It is widely accepted that the relationship between Israel and the Diaspora has changed considerably in recent years. There is certainly no lack of articles which philosophize, point fingers and offer varying points of view on this topic.

Just as the nature of Israelis society has changed in the last fifty years, so to has Jewish life in the Diaspora. Many of the things that were considered to be a "given" in the past are no longer valid, and unconditional support for Israel can no longer be taken for granted.

We believe that it is dialogue which will shape the future relationship. We are hosting a lively and informative "chat" on February 22nd surrounding many of the issues that impact the evolving relationship:

  • Israel as a charity vs. Israel as an economically independent country
  • The status of various streams of Judaism in Israel
  • Is Aliyah still necessary?
  • Has the Zionist dream already been achieved or is it still a work in progress?
  • Does Jewish identity need to be centered around Israel?
  • What is the correct response to assimilation?

Come and join us as we explore many of the issues at the heart of the debate.

Host Shalom Orzach
Affiliation link.gif (780 bytes) Melitz
E-mail info@melitz.org.il
Description Living in western societies at the turn of the 21st Century, our identity as Jews creates constant ambivalence as to when and how we are expressing our Jewishness and fulfilling Jewish values.

In this session, we will ask to discuss key questions regarding the literacy of the literate Jew. What should we be teaching? What should we be learning? What should we be praying? Is language a barrier? Can we hope to continue to communicate in different languages? We are living in what is probably the only generation in Jewish history that speaks only one language. A language reflective of western and Christian values and ideologies and not necessarily reflective of the gut expressions that make us understand and express who we are.

These and many more critical questions will be brought into the dark room. Join us!
